To mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, The Peepul Centre is launching an exhibition on Friday [June 3], covering the Queen’s visits to the city of Leicester since her coronation in 1952 and a showcase of the unique contributions made by the local Belgrave communities over her 70- year reign.

With artefacts collated from the archives, The Peepul Centre has captured an honest snapshot of local community experiences creating a visual timeline.

The Peepul Centre is a busy multi-purpose south Asian performing arts and wellbeing centre offering a wide range of activities. It has a purpose-built theatre with bars and an Indian restaurant, gyms, a spa, sports hall, dance studio, banqueting hall, and a children’s nursery.

The Peepul Enterprise’s charity director, Nash Chhatralia, has also put up an exhibition of some of the Bollywood film archives which may develop into a permanent feature around the centre’s bars.

The day will continue with a fun-filled evening chronicling 70 years of Bollywood songs, incorporating some semi-classical south Asian ghazals [poems] together with traditional Kathak dancing and music.

Dr Santosh Bhanot, head of Peepul health at the centre will also use the celebrations to announce the launch of ‘Kiran Peepul Centre Crisis Café’ to be run in partnership with the NHS.

The Crisis Cafes will work as drop-in centres for anyone struggling with their mental health to talk about their wellbeing. The sessions will run on Wednesday evenings from 17:00 to 22:00 and no appointments will need to be made to attend.

Anil Bhanot, chair of The Peepul Centre, commented: “It was important for us to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee to show how much we appreciate her duty to service, providing a constant reassurance of inclusivity to all communities.”
