Career Overview

Clearwell Caves was first opened to the public in 1968 by Jonathan’s father, Ray Wright, who remained involved with the business until he passed away in 2015. Jonathan had worked with his father to develop the business over many years, becoming registered as a Freeminer in 1981 and helping run the company full-time from 1984.

Jonathan studied for his M&Q Mine Deputy Certificate at Cinderford Mining and Technical College on the last mining course run there over 1986 and 1987. Since 2004, Jonathan has served as Secretary to the Royal Forest of Dean Freeminers' Association and was made President of the Freeminers Association in 2021.

Today, he continues to manage the Clearwell Caves business, which includes an iron mining museum, in partnership with his wife, Heather, who is an artist by trade. The mine still to this day makes pigment from the ochre mined from its depths to help manufacture artists’ paint.

In January 2022, Jonathan appeared on a Leaders Council of Great Britain & Northern Ireland podcast, discussing the importance of leadership and the impact it has had on his career to date.

Education

Jonathan is an alumnus of Cinderford Mining and Technical College, where he acquired one of the very last M&Q Mine Deputy Certificates.
