Serenity Welfare founder Emily Aklan has been named best Business Woman of the Year in the Children and Families category at the 2021 Best Business Women of the Year Awards.

Founded in 2015 by multi-award-winning entrepreneur Debbie Gilbert, the Best Business Women Awards are now considered to be one of the UK’s most prestigious awards for business women. They cover a wide range of sectors and aim to recognise and reward female talent within business across 16 categories, including accolades such as ‘Most Inspiring Business Woman’, ‘Best Boss’, ‘Best Coach’ and more.

Over 5,000 people have entered these awards in the six years that they have been running, and their reputation within the business world has grown exponentially.

The awards are judged by a panel of experts including figures from the banking, finance and law sectors, as well as business consultants and other experts.

Aklan, founder and chief executive of Serenity Welfare, an organisation that offers comprehensive welfare services for children and young people, was honoured to have been selected to receive an award.

She said: “I am truly humbled to have won Business Woman of the Year 2021 for the Children and Families category.

“I have to an extend a huge ‘thank you’ to my incredible and passionate team who contribute to our journey making a positive impact to our vulnerable children and young people. They have helped make all of this possible.”

Aklan founded her organisation, Serenity Welfare, back in 2016 after being horrified by the discovery that children in care - some as young as 10-years-old - were being transported in handcuffs from police stations and between care homes, sometimes with their feet tied.

It was this experience of seeing the challenges within the care and justice systems - and the changes that need to be made - that led Aklan to launch Serenity Welfare’s flagship ‘Hope instead of Handcuffs’ campaign, which bids to end the handcuffing of children.

Everybody at The Leaders Council would like to extend a huge congratulations to Emily Aklan and the whole Serenity Welfare team on this success.
