Sailing Volupia raises £1,500 for Friends and Families

The Sailing Volupia team has raised £1,500 for the Friends & Families charity, after being sponsored for completing the 26-mile Eddystone Sailing Pursuit.

The 26-mile Eddystone Pursuit which starts from Plymouth Sound and spans outward to the Eddystone Lighthouse and back to the starting point, was designed to raise money for charities nominated by the individual yachts which enter.

The event, which first sailed in 2002, is the third largest fundraising event in southwest England, having raised over £800,000 since it began across all beneficiary charities.

The Sailing Volupia team, which participated in the 2022 edition of the sail, raised £1,500 for the Friends & Families charity in Plymouth, Devon, which supports children with disabilities and provides high-quality services to improve wellbeing and quality of life.

The final tally came from a combination of gift aid donations and prize money awarded for Sailing Volupia’s performance on the water. The crew also overcame a major setback in its endeavours, with the boom of the sailboat snapping during the final 10 minutes of the circuit, leaving those on board to put in a gargantuan effort to successfully return ashore.

Kay O’Shaughnessy, one of the charity’s founding members, expressed gratitude on the organisation’s behalf, and paid tribute to Sailing Volupia for overcoming such a significant setback to make it to the finish and raise an impressive amount in funds.

O’Shaughnessy said: “We want to say a massive thank you to the Sailing Volupia crew, who took part in this year’s Eddystone Charity Sailing Pursuit.

“Despite a major setback with the boom, they still managed to raise an incredible £1,500 for Friends & Families. Well done, guys!”
