Over the last year, Rokbak – an arm of Volvo Construction Equipment – has been making significant changes to its site in Motherwell, Scotland, to ensure it operates more sustainably.
The company’s admin building and other annexes have switched to electric-powered systems having formerly been powered by gas. New submeters have been installed across its site to provide more transparency over electricity consumption, empowering its staff teams to take additional steps to reduce any excess.
On a weekly basis, Rokbak reports and distribute the electricity consumption measurements to employees, enabling weekly improvements and resetting of standards.
The business has also compartmentalised its factory into smaller working areas and installed new roller doors with motion sensors, to reduce gas usage and heat loss. In a further move, it has reduced wastage at its site by diverting 95 per cent away from landfill.
Rokbak’s parent company, the Volvo Group, is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, a decade ahead of the UK government. As a subsidiary, Rokbak incorporates sustainability focused sessions into our monthly management meetings to gauge what can be done to help the global business achieve its carbon goals.
As part of its bid to raise awareness around sustainability and climate change, Rokbak welcomed the With Many Roots organisation to its Motherwell premises to deliver a climate change workshop for the staff team.
The session provided staff members with enhanced insight into the impact each individual can have on helping save the planet, and how each person’s actions ties in with the business’ overall sustainable ambitions.
In September, Rokbak representatives attended KHL’s online Sustainability Summit, with HSE and sustainability manager Karen Anne Duffy delivering a virtual talk to attendees.
During the online session, Duffy informed participants of how Rokbak was looking to move toward a more sustainable future and had taken great strides on the way toward achieving its goals over 2022.
This year’s headway is only the beginning of Rokbak and the Volvo Group’s wider mission, with greater involvement in green action and further climate initiatives set to follow in 2023 to accelerate progress.
