Nuffield Trust appoints new chair

Professor Martin Marshall CBE has been appointed as the new chair of the Nuffield Trust health think tank.

Martin Marshall has been chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners Council since 2019 and was previously the organisation’s vice-chair for external affairs. He works as a GP based in Newham, East London and as professor of healthcare improvement at University College London [UCL]. He has also held the roles of deputy chief medical officer and director general within the Department of Health.

Professor Marshall will succeed Andy McKeon CBE in September 2022 when he steps down after six years as Nuffield Trust chair. Andy also held the position of interim chief executive between September 2013 to April 2014 and prior to that had been a trustee for five years.

Under Andy’s leadership, the Nuffield Trust has broadened its areas of research and expanded its reach, and staffing base, assessing the developing health and social care landscapes in each of the four countries of the UK. During his time as chair, the organisation has developed leading research programmes on social care reform, primary care, the impacts of Brexit on the NHS and care systems, prisoner health, and the ongoing impact of the pandemic on access to health and care.

Commenting on the appointment, Nuffield Trust chief executive, Nigel Edwards, said: “This is a fantastic appointment for the Nuffield Trust and comes at an exceptionally challenging time for health and care. Professor Martin Marshall is a hugely respected clinical academic and professional leader. He will undoubtedly bring a wealth of experience that will strengthen our research to improve health and care policy and debate even further.

“I also want to pay tribute to our outgoing chair, Andy McKeon. Andy has a longstanding relationship with the Trust and the organisation owes him a great deal. I have been very fortunate to work with Andy throughout much of my time as chief executive of the Trust and wish him well.”

The new chair-to-be, Professor Martin Marshall, said: “I am delighted to be taking up this appointment, particularly at a time of such significant challenges for our health and social care services.

“I am proud to have been a contributor to the work of the Nuffield Trust over several years and have found its world-renowned research and policy analysis invaluable in my own work as an academic and practising GP.

“I am very much looking forward to working with the trustees and the Nuffield team to build on the Trust’s excellent work and reputation in developing solutions to improve the health and care of people across the UK.”
