Members in Focus: fire prevention specialists Pyrotect

As part of our Members in Focus series, we took a closer look at the work of Leaders Council member, Pyrotect, a midlands-based company who offer a complete fire protection solution to new hand existing buildings.

Fire protection is an essential aspect of building construction and maintenance. With the ever-increasing need for ensuring the safety of lives, assets and buildings in case of fire, Pyrotect has positioned itself as one of the market leaders by investing in their people, training and accreditation.

Pyrotect is accredited as fire protection specialists, with expertise in the installation of passive fire protection materials and systems. They ensure that their services meet the exacting standards required and offer fire containment solutions that safeguard building structure, protect assets and maintain building serviceability after fire. Unlike many of their competitors, a large proportion of Pyrotect’s operatives are directly employed and trained to the highest standards. Any subcontract labour used must carry the same credentials and certification as their directly employed operatives.

The company's culture for continuous development and improvement, reflected in their numerous accreditations, has earned Pyrotect a reputation for quality and reliability. Clients are given access to Firetronic, a digital firestopping software package that provides a complete, live and digital view of all work they undertake, supporting the commercial, operational and administrative requirements of fire protection.

Pyrotect serves a range of sectors, including prestigious projects for a diverse client base. The company is headquartered in Ashby de la Zouch, with an office and warehouse in Coventry, at the heart of the Midlands. Their location allows them to offer their complete range of specialist services nationwide.

One of the services Pyrotect offer is the testing and protection of intumescent paint.

Intumescent paint is a type of coating applied to structural steel members to provide fire protection. When exposed to heat during a fire, the intumescent coating expands and forms a foam-like char that protects the metal from external heat, preserving the steel's structural integrity.

Intumescent paint is typically applied using a spray method, which is fast and cost-effective in providing up to two hours of fire protection to structural steel.

However, the application of intumescent paint can be challenging, as it is sensitive to temperature and humidity and its effectiveness is highly dependent on proper application conditions. Therefore, it is recommended to use an accredited specialist with trained installers and a documented testing process.

Pyrotect’s experienced intumescent teams, led by Contracts Manager for paint, Jason Loughran, follow a comprehensive and ongoing test and inspection program to ensure the efficacy and reliability of the application.

Starting from the engagement with the site management team, our sprayers closely monitor site conditions, including air temperature, steel temperature, humidity, and dew point, and record these along with the results of their rigorous testing program of wet and dry film thickness and marked-up drawings, which provides confidence for their customers.
