Manea Kella featured in Architects' Journal following Nottinghamshire project

London-based architects’ practice Manea Kella has been featured in Architects’ Journal following the completion of an intriguing project in Nottinghamshire, in which it turned a disused garage into a new family home.

The project sprung out of a run-down 120 square metre garage and stabling block in the Nottinghamshire village setting of Colston Bassett. Manea Kella has carefully designed the building so that it is akin to the original structure, but the roof has been replaced and a new timber frame installed which runs across the length of the building.

Co-founder and director at Manea Kella, Adrian Manea, told Architects’ Journal: “Our approach to projects always involves exploring volume, light and a sense of space. This influences the aesthetic of our projects and we tend to value simple, high-quality, often natural materials. We believe that architecture can be rich in character and distinct in identity while also addressing both social and environmental concerns.

“We are very proud of the rigorous attention to technically complex detailing in this project. We spent endless hours in workshops and on site with our fantastic contractors, ensuring that our original design intent was meticulously followed.

“The Japanese Ryokan (a traditional Japanese country inn) was a source of inspiration for the interiors. These establishments are renowned for being beautifully simple and elegant, offering guests respite from busy urban life. The repetition of timber elements, symmetry and minimalism are conceived to help soothe the senses.

“The modern, functional interior spaces of the new house will be complemented by antique furniture from Nottinghamshire and the surrounding counties. A balanced contrast between new and old, together with soft furnishings such as large rugs and delicate curtains will add richness, texture and charm.”

Photographs from the completion of the project have also been featured by Dezeen architecture and design magazine, who have longlisted Manea Kella for its 2022 Emerging Architecture Studio of the Year Award.
