Speaking to the Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani this week, prime minister Liz Truss welcomed the close relationship between the two nations around energy ahead of the winter.

During a call with the Amir, Truss updated him on her mission to Prague to attend the first summit of the European Political Community.

According to Downing Street, both leaders agreed on the importance of international unity in a challenging global climate, while Truss told of how the UK was seeking to bolster its long-term energy independence.

Truss made clear that her long-term ambition was for the UK to be a net energy exporter by 2040. Meanwhile, both leaders spoke warmly about the increased co-operation between the UK and Qatar on defence and trade, which had helped instigate economic growth.

Ahead of the FIFA World Cup starting in November in Qatar, the Amir said that he looked forward to welcoming football supporters from the UK and around the world. The PM wished the Amir and Qatar well in hosting a successful showpiece.

Both leaders committed to remaining in close contact in future as they sought to maintain cordial relations.
