Conservative leadership contest: Badenoch latest to be eliminated as Sunak leads the pack

Former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch is the latest candidate to drop out of contention in the Conservative leadership contest, having finished last in the fourth round of voting on Tuesday.

Badenoch (pictured) - who fought her campaign from an "anti-woke" and smaller state angle - secured 59 votes in total, while at the top end Rishi Sunak remained ahead in the reckoning among Conservative MPs with 118 votes after gaining three.

Meanwhile, Penny Mordaunt picked up a further ten votes from MPs to remain in second with 92, but foreign secretary Liz Truss racked up 86, gaining 15 votes from Monday’s ballot to close the gap ahead of the next vote.

The final ballot among MPs will open on Wednesday (July 20) at 13:00 BST and close two hours later, with a result expected at 16:00 BST on Wednesday afternoon.

Once Wednesday's vote has taken place, the ballot extends to the wider Conservative party who will vote on their preferred candidate to succeed Boris Johnson. The final result will be announced on September 5.
