C-Probe Systems, a leading player in environmental and sustainability solutions, has clinched the prestigious 'Environment and Sustainability Initiative of The Year' award at the 36th annual British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA).

The BCIA, jointly organized by New Civil Engineer and the Institution of Civil Engineers, celebrated the outstanding accomplishments of industry leaders at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

The BCIA, attended by over 1,000 prominent figures from the UK's client, consultant, and contractor communities, provided a splendid platform for recognizing excellence, fostering connections, and acknowledging remarkable achievements.

The 'Environment and Sustainability Initiative of The Year' category was designed to honour specific project-based initiatives dedicated to reducing carbon footprints, enhancing the long-term performance of structures, and promoting environmental sustainability.

Following a comprehensive evaluation by a panel of expert judges, C-Probe Systems emerged victorious for their commendable work on the Omni Centre Car Park in Edinburgh. C-Probe's innovative design, low carbon materials, and management systems were instrumental in resolving a persistent corrosion issue that had been jeopardising the safety and functionality of the bustling four-level car park.

In collaboration with Makers Construction Ltd, the chosen contractor, and oversight from Waterman Structures, the installation was executed with precision, effectively preserving over 8 million kilograms of embodied carbon over the next 25 years. This achievement was made possible through targeted and minimal repairs, adding a mere 90,000 kilograms of carbon. The corrosion management strategy also featured online control and performance assessments of the installed system, ensuring long-term resilience.

The judges were highly impressed by C-Probe Systems' submission and presentation, highlighting the potential for substantial economic and environmental benefits resulting from the innovative approach to managing corrosion in buildings and infrastructure.

Belinda Smart, deputy editor of New Civil Engineer, commented, “The standard across all award categories was particularly impressive this year. The BCIA programme not only celebrates excellence in the construction industry but enables industry peers and colleagues to share knowledge and innovation and to inspire each other. With climate change and rising costs continuing to present sectoral and societal challenges, this year’s winners demonstrate industry’s willingness and ability to rise to those challenges, with solutions that benefit the wider community.”
