BonCulina brings patented technology to the UK education sector

Global food service operator BonCulina has broken into the UK’s education sector, which means that, for the first time ever, schoolchildren will be able to benefit from the patented Torus Pak technology and packaging.

Torus Pak technology allows microwave-heated meals to be released from their packets without disrupting the presentation. Rather than removing the film and flipping the packet upside down, consumers of BonCulina’s meals can simply pull out a trapdoor at the base of the packet, lift the top part of the packet away and leave the meal, presented as the chefs intended, on the plate.

BonCulina has secured contracts with Rosewood Independent School and Branton Community Primary School, both in Northumberland. The students at these schools will now get to enjoy high-quality plated meals with restaurant-standard presentation.

BonCulina hopes that these schools will provide a springboard for further involvement in the sector at large. The firm has stated that it aims to provide a fresh approach to the education food service market ‘while understanding the importance food plays in the academic environment’.

They want to help the education sector become more efficient in meal planning by incorporating an online tool for use in menu choices. The Torus Pak technology also reduces food waste by up to 90 per cent for each meal.

Jennifer Wood, the proprietor at Rosewood Independent School, said: ‘We believe healthy eating supports the link between health, behaviour and achievement. We support a zero-food waste vision; therefore, we were excited to choose BonCulina to provide meal options for our pupils and help us achieve this goal. We share the same vision and were happy to learn more about how they invest a percentage of their profits into providing meals to children in Africa for every child fed in the UK, through their ‘A Meal for a Meal’ CSR programme.’

Chris O’Neill, BonCulina UK sales and operations director, said: ‘It is great to enter the education sector and provide tasty, appealing and nutritionally balanced meals that support students in their school day.’
