Scalloway-based business Shetland Sea Salt can look back on 2021 with immense pride, after being recognised at the national Great Taste awards for its quality of product in September.

The triumph saw the business’ rating from Great Taste awards organiser the Guild of Fine Food upgraded, after it had received a one-star award in 2020.

Judges on the panel of the Great Taste awards singled out the quality of salt produced by the company, saying that it was “clean and sweet and without any harshness” and praising the “gorgeous flakes” and “great clarity of flavour”.

Praise has also been forthcoming from industry association Shetland Food and Drink, which said in its own statement that it was “thrilled” by the fact that the business has been nationally recognised.

Shetland Food and Drink manager Claire White told of her team’s delight at the “outstanding national success” achieved by Shetland Sea Salt, which is also a member of the Taste of Shetland industry group.

White commented: “It is testament to the hard work and ingenuity behind this Shetland family business.”

The Shetland-based business is owned and operated by the Sandison family that resides in Scalloway. Kaye Sandison, one of the company’s figureheads, also owns and manages Hame Fae Hame, a childcare service in the area aimed at one-to-12-year-olds.

One member of the family and part of the Shetland Sea Salt senior leadership team, Laura Hughes, told Shetland News of the company’s sheer delight that the quality of their small-batch product had been recognised in such a prestigious manner.

Hughes said: “We’re proud that we have continued to develop and perfect our product during what has been such a challenging time for everyone.”
