Career Overview

The school’s foundation dates to 1860. It was rated a good education provider in its most recent full Ofsted inspection in 2017 under Smith's leadership.

Each day in his headship, Smith grapples with the challenge of overseeing a diverse school community where more than 35 languages are spoken. He has also established three key priorities during his tenure to improve pupil outcomes and experiences, including reading engagement (involving a project with other schools and The Open University), engaging with children from disadvantaged backgrounds, and fostering personal development through the school curriculum which is underpinned by six core values (compassion, courage, forgiveness, honesty, perseverance and respect).

In July 2020, Smith appeared on a Leaders Council of Great Britain & Northern Ireland podcast, discussing leadership and the impact it has had on his career to date.
