Global Education Plus, the company behind London-based childcare provider Rising Stars Nurseries & Daycare, has launched its new ‘Rising Starlets’ interactive learning platform targeted towards children aged 0-5 and their families.

Gabriel Bright Ugochukwu Dumaka (GB Dumaka) is director of Rising Stars Nursery & Daycare, a nursery based across three sites in north London.

Career Overview

GB Dumaka is director of Rising Stars Nursery & Daycare, having held the role for just over a decade.

GB Dumaka oversees activities at Rising Stars Nursery & Daycare, providing education for children prior to their entry into primary school.

He also boasts a career background in the hospitality, PR and healthcare sectors, having worked in the hospitality industry and worked in marketing and advertising in his native Nigeria, before arriving in the UK and then working for the NHS for a number of years.

GB Dumaka holds a degree in Linguistics and a master’s degree in Education Planning, Economics and International Development. He is a qualified early years’ education provider, holding a professional certificate in early years’ education from Middlesex University.

In March 2020, GB Dumaka appeared on a Leaders Council of Great Britain and Northern Ireland podcast, discussing the importance of leadership and the role it has played in his career to date.

Early career in Nigeria

GB Dumaka graduated from University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State in his native Nigeria in 1984, followed by one-year of national service.

Between 1985 and 1987, GB Dumaka enjoyed a two-year stint in the advertising and marketing industry before moving into hospitality as one of the pioneer management staff of the new five-star Nike Lake Resort Hotel in Enugu State. While there, GB Dumaka held two different positions: Duty Manager and Human Resources Manager.

Move to the UK and NHS work

During his time with the Nike Lake Resort Hotel, GB Dumaka encountered a number of individuals working for the British Council. Inspired by the encounter, GB Dumaka made the decision to resign from his role and move to the UK.

Arriving in January 1992, the transition to British life was initially a challenging one. Unable to enter the hotel industry in London at the management level he had become accustomed to in Nigeria, GB Dumaka made a career out of working for the NHS until the year 2000 to provide for his young family.

In 2000, GB Dumaka’s stay in the UK was formalised to allow for permanent residence.

A change in direction

Following the acquisition of permanent residency in the UK, GB Dumaka's attention turned to education. In 2010 he signed a lease for the property which became the first Rising Stars Nursery and Daycare site. The nursery opened its doors in 2011 following the completion of numerous renovations.

In 2012 he pursued a master's degree in Education Panning, Economics and International Development at University College London (UCL-IOE). In 2014 he acquired the professional Early Years Teacher Status (DfE) from the National College for Teaching and Leadership.

Further Education and enhancing prospects

With Rising Stars Nursery and Daycare operational, GB Dumaka’s attention turned to bolstering his personal development. Being fascinated about the strong relationship between education and migration, he attended University of Cambridge in 2017, where he acquired a certificate in Migration in Global Context.

Also, the future of learning and the evolution of what is possible with distance learning recently began to interest GB Dumaka. He sort more knowledge and understanding in this area by studying and obtaining a certificate of achievement from HarvardX (edX Harvard University) in 2020.

Rising Stars

Under GB Dumaka’s leadership, Rising Stars Nursery and Daycare has gone from strength to strength, opening two additional sites across north London, including one in Wood Green.

In February 2020, Rising Stars launched a new scholarship scheme across its three branches. Rt. Hon David Lammy (MP Tottenham) attended the launch at the main Rising Stars site on Church Lane and Rt. Hon. Catherine West (MP Hornsey and Woodgreen) attended at the Wood Green branch.

To date, Rising Stars is collaborating with local authorities to develop its scholarship scheme and expand its services through digital and online delivery to help continue provision despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
