Government set out priorities for Public Health England in 2021-22

The government has set out its priorities for Public Health England in 2021-22, with reducing health inequality and obesity, healthy weight and nutrition two of the key focuses.

The ambitions were included in a letter from MP Jo Churchill to Public Health England chief executive Michael Brodie, which included seven priorities.

As part of the focus on obesity, healthy weight and nutrition, the government dug into the role Public Health England can play in reducing the number of adults living with obesity and halving childhood obesity by 2030.

This includes offering grants to local authorities to support the provision of up to 455,000 additional adult lifestyle weight management services, up to 6,000 additional children and family lifestyle weight management services, and trial an extended brief intervention via the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) for 60,000 to 85,000 children.

It also wants to roll out a new healthy weight coach training module, expand the Better Health campaign, and develop a public facing nutrient profiling tool.

Private firms will also play a role in the push for a healthier society, with Health Made Easy Group a clear example.

Health Made Easy Group is the leading distributor of health foods and nutritional products in the UK, having helped pioneer a number of healthy eating trends, including free-from and vegan foods and continues to influence trade and consumers.

With brands including Tree of Life, The Health Store, Peppersmith, and Higher Nature in its portfolio, it supplies thousands of retailers across the UK, while also distributing supplements and dental products that support a healthy lifestyle.
