European Parliament set to approve Withdrawal Agreement

The European Parliament is expected to see Brexit clear its final hurdle on Wednesday as it votes on approving the Withdrawal Agreement.

The 751 MEPs will debate the Withdrawal Agreement prior to the vote. After being signed off by European Council and European Commission presidents Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen last week, it is expected to pass without hindrance.

The UK’s last meeting as an EU member state took place on Tuesday this week, with foreign office minister Chris Pincher in attendance at the General Affairs Council.

It is expected that the UK’s 73 MEPs will be in attendance at the vote to mark the occasion, including Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage. The vote is scheduled to take place at 17:00 GMT.

Once the Withdrawal Agreement is approved, it will pave the way for the UK's official exit from the bloc at 23:00 GMT on January 31.

After January 31 the 11-month transition period will officially begin, during which the UK and EU will open talks concerning their future relationship. Trade negotiations are expected to commence in March.
