Coronavirus update: Worries over gown supply

Published by Ross Hindle on April 13th 2020, 1:01pm

The CEO of NHS Providers in England, Chris Hopson, has asked for a "more sustainable" gown supply, as most are currently imported from China.

This call comes after Mr Hopson told the BBC that the number of protective gowns was "very low".

The UK death toll now stands at 11,3290, with more than 88,000 confirmed cases, although experts anticipate the real number of cases to be monumentally higher.

In Europe, the Spanish government has started to ease lockdown measures to "revive" the country's economy after the rate of new infections has fallen for some time.

This includes allowing some personnel at manufacturing, services and construction firms to return to work -- provided they adhere to "strict safety guidelines".

And in the US, governors in southern states have urged "shelters and community safe rooms" to stay open after tornadoes tore through Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas as well as Alabama and Georgia.

The next Leaders Council coronavirus update will follow tomorrow.
