Coronavirus update: US total cases overtake China's

Thousands stood on their doorsteps, balconies and front porches last night to clap the NHS workers on the front line in the battle against coronavirus at 8pm.

The total number of confirmed UK cases is close to 12,000, with more than 500 deaths as a result of Covid-19. It was also announced that a 76-year-old GP, Dr Habib Zaidi, has died after catching the virus.

Met Police commissioner Cressida Dick has also announced that the force will be asking retired officers to temporarily come back to work in a "paid or voluntary" capacity to stem the tide of the outbreak in London.

The big news, however, comes from the US, now the nation with the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the world, surpassing both China and Italy.

Italy remains the country with the highest death toll by some margin however, with 8,000 people having passed away from Covid-19 thus far.

In other news, South Africa has reported its first coronavirus deaths as Covid-19 makes its way into the southern hemisphere, and President Trump has said that there is "much respect" between he and China's President Xi Jinping following a phone call.

The next Leaders Council update will follow this evening.
