It has been announced that more than 1,700 people have died in the UK from Covid-19.

Cabinet minister Michael Gove held the daily press conference today, as the prime minister and the health secretary are both currently isolating after testing positive for the virus.

Mr Gove said that every death marked "the loss of a loved one" and extended sympathies to the families of those who had passed away.

He also said the NHS would be receiving ventilators as soon as next week, and that thousands would "[roll] off the production line this weekend" before being "rapidly distributed".

Finally, Mr Gove said that there must be no "relaxation or slackening" of social distancing measures too early, as they are crucial to what he called "the united national effort".

In Europe, deaths have now passed 12,000 in Italy, and Spain saw the single highest daily number of fatalities in the outbreak thus far, with 849 passing away in the last 24 hours.

Russia has brought in new laws to enforce its lockdown, including jail time for those who violate rules related to the pandemic.

In the US, American Airlines is the most recent airline to admit that is struggling as a result of the novel coronavirus, having said it will be applying for $12 billion in government aid.

And Brazil's president, Jair Bolsonaro, has had social media posts deleted by Facebook and Twitter after he uploaded a video promoting a supposed virus cure. Mr Bolsonaro has come under fire repeatedly for downplaying the impact of the virus among the global community.
