Coronavirus update: Cobra to make lockdown decision today

Later today, ministers in the government's emergency Cobra committee will review the effect of lockdown measures brought in on March 23. A firm decision is not expected, however.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson remains in intensive care, but his position is supposedly "improving".

Global confirmed cases are now nearing 1.5 million, although experts anticipate the real number to be much higher than that. Almost 90,000 people have died.

The Italian PM has told the BBC that he believes that the "risk of failure" for the EU is real, and that the leaders in Europe were "facing an appointment with history".

After President Trump's comments accusing the WHO of being "very China-centric", the UN Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has asked for "unity at national level" and that nations "quarantine Covid politics".

And after calls from UN Secretery General António Guterres, the Saudi coalition in Yemen has declared a ceasefire.

The next Leaders Council update will follow tomorrow, Good Friday.
