Capt Tom Moore has completed his one hundredth lap of his garden this morning, raising over £12 million for the NHS in the process.

Capt Moore had originally intended on raising £1,000 for the National Health Service, completing 100 sponsored laps of his garden prior to his one hundredth birthday at the end of the month.

The fund raising had been inspired by the “magnificent” NHS staff who helped Capt Moore with treatment for cancer and a broken hip.

He has since completed 100 laps of his 25-metre loop in his garden in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire, with the aid of a walking frame.

Since setting up his fundraising page, Capt Moore has raised over £12 million with donations from over 640,000 people.

The sheer quantity of donations received this morning has temporarily crashed his Just Giving Page.

Having finished the challenge, he said: "I feel fine, I hope you're all feeling fine too.

"I never dreamt I would be involved in such an occasion as this.”

Capt Moore said that the money raised thus far was "an absolutely fantastic sum”.

Hannah Ingram-Moore, Capt Moore’s daughter said: "We are absolutely floored by what has been achieved but we're so happy, so humbled and so proud.

"He's a beacon of hope in dark times and I think we all need something like this to believe in and it's for such an amazing cause."

The retired soldier offered his advice for the nation for coping during the lock-down.

He said: "You've all got to remember that we will get through it in the end, it will all be right.

"For all those people finding it difficult at the moment, the sun will shine on you again and the clouds will go away."

A petition to provide Capt Moore with a knighthood currently has 2,000 signatories and over 150 charities will benefit from his donation.
