Career Overview
Early years in the charity industry
Currie’s journey in the charitable sector began in 1991 with SCOPE, a student-driven nonprofit enterprise aimed at improving the high school education system. She worked as an area fundraiser for the organisation until 1994, when she joined Marie Curie Cancer Care.
First management role
Having worked at Marie Curie Cancer Care since 1994, in July 2002 Currie was appointed director of fundraising it what was her first senior role. She took on responsibility for the voluntary income of the charity as well as development of growth strategy, corporate affairs, handling major gifts, legacies, and community and events fundraising, plus direct marketing.
Further directorships
Leaving Marie Curie after a successful 15 years, Currie moved onto pastures new with Sense, the charity for Deafblind People, where she became the group director of external affairs and knowledge. In her role, Currie brought together the communications and public affairs teams at Sense and took an active role overseeing fundraising initiatives, shops and trading, information, advice and research, public policy and legal services, all in order to create a group directorate that supported the ambitious growth of the charity.
Currie would remain with Sense until August 2012, and she took up her current role at the helm of Kidney Research UK the following month.
