Richard Dorney is a director at Strongmind Resiliency Training, a specialist provider of training in mental health awareness, resilience, and trauma management.
Career Overview
After a nearly 40-year career in the British Army in numerous roles, Dorney is an expert on strong leadership. Founding Strongmind in 2014, he has become an award-winning director in his capacity and his services have been in high demand among NHS bodies and emergency services during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In September 2020, Dorney appeared on a Leaders Council of Great Britain & Northern Ireland podcast, discussing the importance of leadership and the impact it has had on his career to date.
He regularly delivers specialist training to a wide range of organisations from the media to law enforcement and the NHS, he is frequently consulted on how to manage the impact of highly stressful or traumatic incidents.
After a long military career Dorney has a huge amount of experience in the delivery of projects in operational settings. He served in Northern Ireland, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Africa and the Far East. Since leaving the military he has delivered projects in Kosovo and Brazil as well as all over the UK. This varied experience has given him a unique understanding of the stresses under which people work in operational settings. He uses this understanding to shape resilience training for those working under extreme stress, particularly in the public sector.
Dorney was made MBE in 2008 for services to Trauma Management in the British Army. He was admitted to the order of St John of Jerusalem as a member in 2012 and was awarded a Queens Commendation for Valuable Service (QCVS) in Northern Ireland in 1994. He holds a Masters Degree in War and Psychiatry from Kings College London. and a certificate in Psychotraumatology form the European Society of Traumatic Stress Studies. He graduated with a CMI Level 8 in Strategic Management from Manchester Business school and holds a level 7 diploma in Strategic Management from the institute of Leadership and Management. He was the recipient of a prestigious lifetime achievement award from the Ex Forces in Business Awards in 2019. In 2018 Strongmind Resiliency Training won the best business scale up award from the Soldiering on Awards under his leadership. Dorney is the author of two successful books
