Career Overview

Kerry Shoesmith is the operational director and head of therapies at Anderida Adolescent Care.

Having worked with children and young people for more than 20 years, Kerry boasts an established background in her field. Initially harbouring ambitions of becoming a social worker, Kerry enrolled onto a Social Work course and carried out voluntary work in victim support at a youth centre, hosting drop-in advice sessions and working as an advocate for looked-after children.

Kerry’s voluntary work further fuelled her inner passion for developing young people and giving them the greatest opportunities in life and sparked an interest in residential care for young people. In 2001, about a year into her advocacy work, she joined Anderida Adolescent Care as a mentor at one of its residential homes.

Moving away from her desire to become a social worker and instead wishing to spend greater amounts of time directly working with young people, Kerry ascended the leadership hierarchy within Anderida. She was soon appointed to the role of senior deputy home manager before being put in registered charge of her own residential home.

During her time as a registered manager, Kerry led her setting to six consecutive ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted outcome, becoming one of only a handful in 1,450 homes of its kind to achieve the feat.

It was not long before Kerry climbed the ladder again to take on her current operational director role within Anderida, at which time she first became involved with cognitive behavioural therapy [CBT] which proved influential for her personal development. Qualifying as a CBT therapist in 2013 at the University of the West of England [UWE], Kerry began to provide therapeutic group supervision for care staff, direct therapy for young people, and therapy for carers and parents based on CBT and non-violent resistance [NVR] methodology.

Kerry’s directorship coincided with the time that NVR was first introduced to the UK having originated in Israel, and she helped oversee Anderida’s transition into an NVR organisation. This move helped improve relationships between the young people in Anderida’s care and their teachers, parents, relatives and caregivers, and proved transformative for the organisation in combatting negative and destructive behaviours. Kerry and her Anderida colleagues later established the Non-Violent Resistance Association [NVRA], which functions as a national and international accrediting body for the NVR Professional Standards.

As part of her role within Anderida’s leadership, Kerry helps uphold the organisation’s ethos of fighting for the rights of children and families, challenging the established norms and frameworks of statutory organisations to offer families greater flexibility in time together and other aspects of social work.

Education

Kerry is a qualified BACP registered CBT therapist, having attained a Master’s Degree in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy from the University of the West of England [UWE]. She is also an accredited NVR practitioner and trainer, helping educate local authorities, social workers, families and foster carers in the non-violent resistance mode of practice.
