Career Overview

Gavin Cleary joined Locate in Kent in 2018, having previously worked as Managing Director of Farringdon Square Ltd. Locate in Kent is the official inward investment agency for Kent and Medway. Promoting the county as a prime location for business and investment and providing free, confidential support to businesses setting up, expanding, or relocating.

In February 2020, Gavin Cleary appeared on a Leaders Council of Great Britain and Northern Ireland podcast, discussing the importance of leadership and the role it has played in his career to date.

Cleary is an alumnus of the University of Cambridge, graduating with an MA in Economics with a module in Engineering.

Engineering experience

In the mid-1990s, Cleary worked with the Ford Motor Company as a sponsored engineering student, overlapping with his degree studies.

Move into Finance and starting a business

After graduating and leaving Ford in 1998, Cleary moved into consulting within the Finance industry with Huxley Finance and then Pelham International.

In 2006, he founded and managed his own business venture, Eurisko Search. The search business specialised in providing traders, sales-people, structurers and quantitative analysts to banks and hedge funds in London and other financial centres.

Move into directorship

In 2008, Cleary moved onto pastures new and took up a director role at TGT Partners, a GreenTech focused capital raising business, providing funding for revenue generating businesses as well as incubation and funding for start-ups. He remained there until 2011, when he was appointed a director of OCO Global, a business which established itself as the leading authority on foreign investment.

Cleary would remain with OCO Global until 2015. During his time there, he took up another role as an investment advisor and then chief commercial officer for the now defunct government body, UK Trade and Investment, which today has been absorbed into the government Department for International Trade.

Between 2012 and 2015, Cleary balanced these responsibilities with a UK and Ireland director's role at the Enterprise Florida organisation. Enterprise Florida is the official economic development organisation for the state of Florida, and Cleary's mandate was to help UK and Irish businesses to locate, expand or start-up in the state, including assistance in M&A activity.

2016 onwards

In April 2016, Cleary was appointed managing director of Farringdon Square Ltd, a Financial Services economic development consultancy focused on "traditional" financial services, back and middle office operations and FinTech. He would remain there for two years, before taking up his current role at Locate in Kent in April 2018.

Cleary also spent September to December of 2016 working as interim commercial director for NewFinance, a global network of over 11,000 professionals actively involved in Financial Innovation through Technology.
