Notable Achievements

  • Investors in People Gold award
Heather Williams is the practice owner and lead clinical dentist of H Williams and Associates, an award winning dental practice based in Orpington offering a range of dental treatments and services.

Career Overview

Originally part of a three-practice partnership involving three partners, Heather has owned her practice since 1997 when the original partnership split.

Heather has over 30 years of clinical experience and at least 24 years of senior management experience. She has overall control of the practice, regarding management, risk management, finance and budgeting, communications, planning and vision.

In her leadership of the practice, Heather places an emphasis on holistic care in dentistry. Having long believed a healthy mouth equals a heathy body, she has focused the practice on preventative treatment as well as curative, encouraging patients to regularly visit hygienists to help keep teeth clean in hard to reach areas of the mouth where it is difficult to fully clean by brushing alone.

The practice also pioneers the latest advancements in dental equipment and treatments, utilising digital scanners instead of moulded impressions for patients that require braces, and using laser treatment on teeth instead of physical drills; a technique which has also proven effective in treatments for gum disease within the practice.

Heather is a Member of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners as well as the Fluoride Society and is passionate about reducing tooth decay, particularly in children and the most vulnerable. She is an ardent campaigner for the fluoridation of drinking water in the UK and lobbied local MP Gareth Bacon on the importance of introducing fluoride into the water supply to protect people’s oral health and prevent tooth decay.

In 2016, Heather launched her own private GP practice, a move driven by her holistic care approach. Appointments and treatments are delivered by private GPs.

She was previously chair of Bromley Local Dental Committee representing the committee locally and nationally. Within the role, Heather strived to ensure dentistry within Bromley was accessible to all, particularly the provision of out-of-hours treatment where it was required.

Education

Heather holds a degree in Dental Surgery from King’s College London, graduating from one of the King’s Health Partners, Guy’s Hospital, in 1984. She later went on to complete a postgraduate degree in General Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons, graduating in 1998. In the same year, she became a member of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners.

Charity and Volunteer Work

In 2004, Heather was a founding trustee for Chislehurst Youth for Christ, a youth project impacting the lives of young people. The project provides youth facilities to provide activities for young people to prevent them from spending excessive amounts of time on the streets and potentially being embroiled in gang culture and crime.

Empowered by the devastating impact that criminal activities can have on people and families, Heather is passionate about tackling crime on the streets of London, particularly knife crime and human trafficking. She has sponsored and paid for the provision of a knife bin in West Kensington near the site of the Grenfell Tower fire to help crack down on knife crime.

In her spare time, Heather regularly volunteers as a tour guide at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, an activity which feeds into her personal passion for history.

Investing in People

Heather has led the practice to success in achieving an Investors in People Gold Award. She takes immense pride in upskilling the next generation in the profession and encouraging every member of her team to reach their full potential.

Over the years, dental nurses that have progressed through her practice via apprenticeship schemes have qualified as dentists and gone on to complete hygienist courses at university, while apprentices that had not previously trained as dentists have upskilled to the point where they have been ready to undergo university study in the profession. Other dentistry graduates that have progressed through university into the practice have trained up to the point where they have been sufficiently equipped to pursue further higher level study, including postgraduates and PhDs.
